A Transparent 10-Point Review System
Every betting site, sportsbook and casino brand is assessed against the same ten criteria, supported by labelled evidence, score limits and critical player-protection safeguards.
The BettingGuru 10-point review system is the framework we use to assess operators consistently. It explains why one brand receives a stronger rating than another and prevents a large bonus, attractive design or extensive product range from hiding weaknesses in licensing, withdrawals, support or player protection.
Ratings appear in our sports betting site comparisons and casino review section. This page explains the evidence, calculations and safeguards behind those ratings.
The principle behind every score
Strong commercial features cannot override a serious licensing, security, withdrawal or responsible-gambling weakness. The mathematical total is always checked against our critical safeguards.
How the BettingGuru 10-Point Review System Calculates Scores
Every category is scored out of ten. The raw result is rounded to one decimal before it is converted to five stars.
Individual category scores use whole or half points. The ten scores are totalled first, divided by 10, and rounded once to one decimal for the published /10 rating. The star rating is calculated from that published score and rounded to one decimal for display. For example, 8.8 ÷ 2 = 4.4 stars.
Each visible star can be filled in ten equal segments, with two segments in each of its five arms. A value of 0.1 star fills one segment, while 0.2 star fills one complete arm.
The 10 BettingGuru Rating Criteria
Each category is worth ten points during the normal calculation.
Licensing & Legal Transparency
We verify the legal company, licence number, regulator, jurisdiction and the products covered by the licence.
Brand Trust & Reputation
We assess ownership, operating history, regulatory record, complaint patterns and the operator’s response to customers.
Security Transparency & Account Protection
We check visible security information, identity verification, login controls, privacy policies and account safeguards.
Deposits & Payment Methods
We review ZAR support, local payment choices, minimum deposits, limits, fees and cashier usability.
Withdrawal Terms & Payout Evidence
We check processing times, limits, fees, verification, method restrictions and the quality of payout evidence.
Bonus Fairness & Wagering Terms
We examine wagering, expiry, minimum odds, maximum bets, exclusions, game contribution and withdrawal restrictions.
Product Quality
We assess sportsbook markets and odds or casino games, providers, live content, navigation and product transparency.
Mobile Experience
We test mobile-site and app speed, navigation, registration, cashier functions and product performance.
Customer Support
We check contact channels, opening hours, response time, answer quality, help content and complaint handling.
Responsible Gambling Tools
We review age messaging, limits, time-outs, self-exclusion, support links and the accessibility of safer-gambling controls.
High Ratings Require Strong Evidence
The absence of a confirmed problem is not treated as proof of excellent performance.
General evidence ceiling
A category should normally not receive more than 7.5 out of 10 when an important function has not been directly tested or independently verified. Scores of 8.0 or higher require clear evidence of strong performance. Scores of 9.0 or higher require exceptional, strongly supported performance.
BettingGuru completed or observed the relevant process. Strong results can support a high score.
Confirmed by a regulator, licence certificate or another authoritative record.
Found in terms, cashier pages or help content. Important claims may still need confirmation.
Confirmed by an operator representative and stronger when supported by written terms.
Complaint patterns, app reviews and editorial sources assessed for volume, recency and severity.
Important uncertainty normally limits the score to 7.5 or below.
What Individual Category Scores Mean
| Category score | Meaning | Evidence standard |
|---|---|---|
| 9.0–10.0 | Excellent | Exceptional performance supported by strong evidence, with very few meaningful weaknesses. |
| 8.0–8.5 | Strong | Performs very well, with clear supporting evidence and only minor limitations. |
| 7.0–7.5 | Good | Generally positive, but one or more notable limitations or incomplete checks prevent a higher score. |
| 6.0–6.5 | Fair | Acceptable overall, but meaningful weaknesses or uncertainty affect the experience. |
| 4.0–5.5 | Poor | Major restrictions, repeated problems or serious transparency gaps. |
| 0.0–3.5 | Critical | Serious deficiencies, unverifiable information or a major player-protection concern. |
Why there are no category-score gaps: individual criteria are scored only in half-point increments. A category can therefore receive values such as 7.0, 7.5, 8.0 or 8.5, but not 7.9, 8.6 or 8.99. The next band begins at the next possible half-point score: 8.5 is Strong and 9.0 is Excellent; 7.5 is Good and 8.0 is Strong; 6.5 is Fair and 7.0 is Good.
Why these labels and colours: “Good” means the category performs positively overall but still has notable limitations. “Fair” means the category remains acceptable overall, but meaningful weaknesses or uncertainty prevent a Good rating. Blue is reserved for exceptional Excellent scores, green signals Strong performance, amber marks Good, orange marks Fair, red marks Poor and dark red marks Critical.
The Critical-Safeguards Rule
Certain weaknesses are too important to be cancelled out by a strong bonus, product or interface.
- If the applicable South African licence cannot be verified, the operator cannot receive a Recommended badge and the rating may be withheld.
- Credible evidence of a serious unresolved legal, security or non-payment concern may cause the rating to be suspended.
- If a critical safeguard scores below 4.0, the overall score is capped at 6.9 out of 10.
- If a critical safeguard scores between 4.0 and 5.5, the overall score cannot exceed 7.9 and the weakness must be prominently explained.
- An operator cannot receive an Excellent overall rating when any critical safeguard scores below 7.0.
- Every cap, suspension or withheld rating is explained in the individual operator review.
How We Assess Each Rating Point
Open each section to see the evidence and limitations considered.
01 Licensing & Legal Transparency
Licensing is the first major check because a professional-looking website is not proof that an operator is authorised. We look for the legal company name, licence number, issuing regulator, registered details and the products covered by the licence.
A licence is assessed according to the specific product being reviewed. A sportsbook, casino or offshore licence is not automatically treated as authorisation for every product offered on the same website.
We compare the operator’s claims with the National Gambling Board Verified Operators portal and the relevant provincial licensing authority.
02 Brand Trust & Reputation
Reputation is assessed separately from licensing. A licensed and well-known operator may still have recurring complaints involving withdrawals, accounts, support or promotions.
We use a consistent baseline wherever information is available. This may include company history, ownership, regulatory action, app-store feedback, independent customer-review platforms, complaint themes and the operator’s responses.
One negative review does not determine the score. We consider the number, recency, severity and consistency of complaints, whether the operator responds and whether there is visible evidence of resolution. A large brand does not receive a high score simply because it is well known.
03 Security Transparency & Account Protection
We check encrypted website access, privacy notices, identity-verification procedures, account alerts, login controls, device management and other visible safeguards.
This is an editorial assessment of public evidence, not a penetration test or cybersecurity certification. A strong score means the operator demonstrates appropriate visible protections; it does not mean BettingGuru has audited the underlying technical systems.
04 Deposits & Payment Methods
Payments are reviewed from a South African user’s perspective. We consider South African rand support, cards, instant EFT, bank transfer, vouchers, e-wallets and other relevant local methods.
Minimum deposits, transaction limits, possible fees and the clarity of the cashier information also affect the score. A long payment list does not automatically earn a high rating; the methods must be practical and accurately documented.
05 Withdrawal Terms & Payout Evidence
Withdrawals receive a separate score because depositing is usually easier than getting money out. We review advertised processing times, daily and monthly limits, verification requirements, fees and rules that could delay or reduce a payout.
Where BettingGuru completed a real-money withdrawal, the review states this clearly. Otherwise, the score is based on published policies, support responses, official information and credible third-party patterns. Operator promises are never presented as first-hand testing.
06 Bonus Fairness & Wagering Terms
A large headline offer can hide difficult conditions. We examine wagering requirements, qualifying deposits, minimum odds, game contribution, expiry periods, maximum-bet rules, excluded products, withdrawal caps and verification conditions.
Bonuses score better when the complete rules are easy to find, understandable and reasonably achievable. Contradictory or unusually restrictive terms reduce the score even when the advertised amount is large.
Readers can use our Bonus Wagering Calculator to estimate the actual wagering requirement before claiming an offer.
07 Product Quality
For sportsbooks, we review sports coverage, South African competitions, odds quality, market depth, live betting, cash-out, bet builders, streaming and bet-slip usability.
For casino brands or casino-style sections, we examine slots, table games, live dealer content, jackpots, provider depth, lobby organisation, search tools and available information about game rules or RTP.
Quantity matters, but usability, reliability and transparency matter as well.
08 Mobile Experience
Mobile performance is treated as a full scoring category. We review the responsive website and any available app, including speed, navigation, registration, deposits, withdrawals, live betting, game loading and reliability.
The score reflects practical usability rather than the simple existence of an app. Browser redirection, failed downloads, missing platform support and unstable features are reflected in the rating.
09 Customer Support
Support is judged on availability, contact options and usefulness. We check live chat, telephone, email, social channels and help-centre information where available.
A basic chatbot is not treated as equivalent to a trained live agent. High scores require evidence that important questions about withdrawals, bonuses, verification and account restrictions receive clear and useful answers.
10 Responsible Gambling Tools
This category covers 18+ messaging, deposit and loss limits, session controls, reality checks, cooling-off periods, self-exclusion and access to specialist help.
Operators score better when safer-gambling tools are visible, understandable and easy to activate. We also check access to recognised assistance such as the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation.
BettingGuru Overall Rating Bands
| Score /10 | Raw star equivalent /5 | Rating | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0–10.0 | 4.50–5.00 | Excellent | Top-tier performance supported by strong evidence, with no disqualifying safeguard weakness. |
| 8.0–8.9 | 4.00–4.45 | Very Strong | Performs very well overall, with clear evidence and only minor limitations. |
| 7.0–7.9 | 3.50–3.95 | Good | Generally positive, but notable limitations or incomplete checks prevent a higher score. |
| 6.0–6.9 | 3.00–3.45 | Fair | Acceptable overall, but meaningful weaknesses, restrictions or uncertainty affect the experience. |
| 4.0–5.9 | 2.00–2.95 | Poor | Major weaknesses, repeated problems or serious transparency gaps make the operator difficult to recommend. |
| 0.0–3.9 | 0.00–1.95 | Critical | Severe deficiencies, unverifiable information or a critical safeguard concern. The operator is not recommended and the rating may be withheld. |
Overall-rating colours: the same intuitive colour order is used here, but the labels belong to the final combined operator score. Blue marks an Excellent overall result, green marks Very Strong, amber marks Good, orange marks Fair, red marks Poor and dark red marks Critical.
How final-score precision works: ten half-point category scores produce a total that changes in 0.5-point steps. After division by 10, the raw overall score can change in 0.05 steps, such as 8.85, 8.90 or 8.95. It is then rounded once to one decimal for publication. Values such as 3.99, 5.99, 6.99, 7.99 and 8.99 cannot occur in this system. The published /10 score determines the rating band.
Examples: a raw score of 8.90 is published as 8.9 and remains Very Strong. A raw score of 8.95 rounds to 9.0 and enters the Excellent band. The star value is calculated from the published score and rounded to one decimal for the segmented star display; for example, 8.9 ÷ 2 = 4.45, displayed as 4.5 stars.
How We Gather, Compare and Update Evidence
A rating is a dated snapshot
Operators can change licences, ownership, payment methods, withdrawal rules, bonuses, apps, products, support channels and responsible-gambling tools. The latest review or update date should appear on every operator page.
- Confirm the legal company, licence number, regulator and product scope.
- Review deposits, withdrawals, verification, transaction limits and possible fees.
- Check bonus conditions beyond the promotional headline.
- Inspect sportsbook markets or casino products and available provider information.
- Test mobile navigation and important account journeys where access allows.
- Check support channels and record the usefulness of the response.
- Review responsible-gambling controls and self-exclusion information.
- Record missing details, contradictions and matters requiring an update.
- Compare every operator against the same evidence and category standards.
Affiliate Relationships Do Not Buy Higher Scores
Some operators featured on BettingGuru may have an affiliate relationship with the website. BettingGuru may receive commission when a reader follows certain links and registers. As explained in our Disclaimer and Affiliate Disclosure, commercial relationships do not buy a higher score and do not remove negative findings.
The same methodology applies to affiliate partners, non-partners and operators receiving a limited recommendation. An operator can improve its rating only by improving the evidence and user experience covered by the published criteria.
What a BettingGuru Rating Does — and Does Not — Mean
The BettingGuru 10-point review system is designed to make operator ratings clearer, more consistent and easier to compare. It is an editorial comparison tool, not an official licence, regulator approval, legal opinion, security certification or guarantee that every user will have the same experience.
A high score means an operator performed strongly against our published criteria at the time of review. It does not guarantee winnings, uninterrupted service, immediate withdrawals or the outcome of an individual complaint.
Start with the overall score, then read the category breakdown, evidence notes, strengths, weaknesses and points to check. Verify current licence, bonus and withdrawal information before registering or depositing.
