NGB Verified Operators Register: How to Check a Betting Site Is Licensed

đź“° Industry News

The NGB verified operators register is the official list of licensed gambling operators in South Africa, and it is the quickest way to check whether a betting site holds a licence before you deposit.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Gambling law changes, and how it applies depends on your situation. See our Disclaimer and speak to a qualified South African lawyer if you need advice.

What the NGB Verified Operators Register Is

On 8 April 2026 the National Gambling Board announced a public web portal with a consolidated list of licensed gambling operators in South Africa, whether online or land-based. The NGB built it together with the nine provincial licensing authorities, which are the bodies that actually issue gambling licences, and says the list is regularly updated.

The NGB’s media release states that only operators listed on the platform are legally authorised to offer gambling services in South Africa. That is the NGB’s position, and we report it as such. The NGB also says the list is not published to advertise gambling, but to protect the public from illegal sites and venues. When we looked on 21 September 2026 the register held more than 3,000 entries, covering bookmakers, casinos, bingo operators, totalizators and site operators.

How to Check If a Betting Site Is Licensed

  1. Find the legal name and licence number. Look in the site’s footer or its terms and conditions page. A licensed operator should be able to tell you its legal company name, the province and the licence number.
  2. Open the register. It is on the NGB website at ngb.org.za/verified-operators.
  3. Search. Type the company name or the licence number into the table’s search box. Search by the legal name where you can, because the register lists licence holders by legal entity, sometimes with the trading name after “t/a”.
  4. Compare. The register shows the name, type (for example bookmaker or casino), address, licence number and province. They should match what the operator shows you.
  5. If you cannot find it, try variations of the name, then ask the operator for its licence details. If you still cannot confirm a licence, do not deposit. The NGB asks the public to report suspicious or illegal gambling on 010 003 3475 or info@ngb.org.za, or to the relevant provincial licensing authority.

The register has six columns: Name, Type, Site/Physical Address, Route Operator, Licence Number and Province. On the register, the Route Operator column is filled in only for site operators, the venues that host limited payout machines, and it is empty for every bookmaker entry, so you can ignore it when you check a bookmaker.

What the Register Does Not Tell You

One operator often appears many times. The register lists licences by legal entity and by province, and sometimes by shop, so a brand you know may show up under several company names. That is why searching by legal name and licence number works better than searching by brand.

A listing shows that a licence exists in a province. It does not say whether that licence covers online betting or online casino games, and the legal status of online casino games in South Africa is contested. For background, read our guides on whether online casinos are legal in South Africa, South African gambling laws and online casino licences in South Africa.

The register is compiled from data supplied by the provincial authorities, so always look at the “last updated” date shown on the page before you rely on it.

Where the Operators We Review Appear on the NGB Verified Operators Register

On 21 September 2026 we searched the register for every operator we review. The table shows the names as they appear on the register, shortened where an operator has many entries, and all of them are listed with the type bookmaker. It is not a rating or an endorsement, and it says nothing about the online casino products discussed above. Each operator name links to our review.
