Welcome to our PSL Matchday 4 preview. Matchday 3 could not have finished tighter. Once Mamelodi Sundowns beat Marumo Gallants 2-0 in their delayed fixture on 19 August, four clubs, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns and AmaZulu, all sat on 7 points from three games, separated only by goal difference. Matchday 4 (25-26 August) throws two of those four straight at each other, with Sundowns hosting AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld. Here’s every fixture, kick-off time, and what’s at stake.

Match of the Weekend: Sundowns vs AmaZulu

Wednesday’s clash at Loftus Versfeld is the standout fixture of the round. Sundowns arrive on the back of Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants, their third straight game unbeaten to open the season, and now sit level on points with the league’s top three. AmaZulu head into the match in the top four themselves after a 2-0 win over Siwelele in Matchday 3. It’s a genuine six-pointer in the context of an already congested title picture: a Sundowns win would put daylight between them and Usuthu, while an AmaZulu win or draw keeps all four of the tied-on-points sides within touching distance of each other heading into September. Our lean: Sundowns to edge it, possibly 2-1.

Kruger United vs Durban City

Both sides are still searching for their first league win. Kruger United, in their debut Premiership season, are winless through three rounds, an opening 3-1 loss to Kaizer Chiefs, a 0-0 draw with Marumo Gallants, then a 2-1 defeat to Milford FC last time out. Durban City remain winless too, having opened with a 1-0 loss to Sekhukhune United before drawing 1-1 with Richards Bay in Matchday 3. Neither side has shown much going forward, expect a cagey, low-scoring affair between two teams both still finding their feet. Our lean: a draw, maybe 1-1.

Marumo Gallants vs TS Galaxy

Gallants are winless and sit deep in the bottom half of the table (15th as of last week) after three rounds: a draw with Kruger United, a 3-1 defeat to Stellenbosch, and Wednesday’s 2-0 loss away at Mamelodi Sundowns. TS Galaxy have taken one point from their two most recent outings (a narrow 3-2 defeat to Sundowns and a goalless draw with Golden Arrows). Neither side arrives with real form on their side, but Galaxy’s slightly firmer defensive showing gives them a marginal edge on paper. Our lean: a narrow TS Galaxy win.

Orlando Pirates vs Sekhukhune United

Pirates head into the round top of the four-way tie on goal difference, in form after their 3-0 demolition of Chippa United followed a 1-1 draw with AmaZulu. Sekhukhune arrive with 6 points from 3 games (2 wins, 1 loss). Their only defeat came away at Kaizer Chiefs in Matchday 2, sandwiched between wins over Durban City and Polokwane City. A genuinely tough test for Pirates against a side that has otherwise started well. Our lean: Pirates to win, but not comfortably.

Siwelele vs Chippa United

The definition of a relegation six-pointer this early in the season. Siwelele have taken just 1 point from 3 games and are on a two-match losing streak, an opening 2-2 draw with TS Galaxy, then straight defeats to Milford and AmaZulu. Chippa aren’t much better off, 2 points from 3, their winless run now stretching to three matches after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Orlando Pirates. Whoever blinks first here risks an early gap opening at the bottom of the table. Our lean: too close to call, a draw feels likely.

Mamelodi Sundowns vs AmaZulu

Golden Arrows vs Stellenbosch

Arrows have drawn both of their confirmed results so far (0-0 with Chippa in the opener, 0-0 with TS Galaxy in Matchday 3), still searching for their first win of the season. Stellenbosch travel in the opposite kind of form. After an opening loss to AmaZulu and a wild 3-3 draw with Polokwane City, they picked up their first win of the campaign in style, with teenager Quwan Plaatjies scoring a hat-trick on his professional debut in a 3-1 win over Marumo Gallants. Momentum clearly favours the visitors here. Our lean: Stellenbosch to win.

Polokwane City vs Milford

Polokwane sit on 4 points from 3 games (a win, a draw, a loss) but their coach has been vocal this week about a leaking defence: nine goals conceded across their last four matches in all competitions, including three in an MTN8 defeat to Sundowns. Milford, newly promoted, have responded to an opening-day loss to Orlando Pirates with back-to-back wins (over Siwelele, then 2-1 over Kruger United) and arrive full of confidence. On current form, this looks like a good opportunity for Milford to make it three in a row against a defensively shaky home side. Our lean: Milford to win.

Richards Bay vs Kaizer Chiefs

Chiefs are unbeaten and part of the four-way tie at the top, having beaten Kruger United and Sekhukhune United in their first two matches before drawing 1-1 with Sundowns in Matchday 3. Richards Bay, by contrast, remain winless after three rounds, a narrow opening loss to Polokwane followed by draws against Chippa United and Durban City. On paper this is a routine away fixture for Chiefs, though Richards Bay’s habit of drawing at home this season makes a repeat scoreline a genuine possibility. Our lean: Chiefs to win, with a draw as the main upset risk.
